A recent article in the Daily Mail highlighted the issue of abdominal muscle separation that can occur during pregnancy and needs to recover postnatally. If it does not naturally come together and is left untreated it can lead to problems such as back pain and difficulty returning to normal activities and exercise, increasing the risk of injury.
What is important in recovery of abdominal muscle separation, (also know as rectus abdominus diastsis or diastasis rectii), is core muscle strength rather than achieving complete muscle closure as is commonly thought.
When your tummy ‘domes’ during pregnancy, it is an indication of muscle separation, if this continues after delivery you should have it assessed and start a treatment programme to encourage optimum recovery. Doing not only safe exercises but the correct exercises to encourage recovery is vital. Often, engaging in athe wrong sort of activities could be making the diastasis worse or couldbe impeding improvement.
